Graduation and Master's Thesis
Help & Tips
Do you have questions on how to write your thesis or regarding formal criteria? Information is provided in the section Academic Honesty and Integrity.
Step 1: Approval of thesis topic and supervisor
Before you start working on your thesis, the Directorate of Studies must approve your topic choice and supervisor.
Please note that a thesis topic should be chosen in a way that allows for completion of the thesis within six months time.
The following groups of people qualify for thesis supervision:
- University professors, habilitated university staff, and associated university professors (Ao. Univ.-Prof., Univ. Prof., Univ. Doz., Priv. Doz., Assoz. Univ.-Prof.,… ): supervision and assessment
- Tenure Track associated professors (Assoz. Prof.) and/or assistant professors (Ass. Prof.): dependent on qualification agreement – please contact the SSC Philosophy
- Members of the academic university staff holding a doctoral degree/PhD: in case of master's theses funded by the European Research Council excellence funds, the START or Wittgenstein award, or the WWTF's "Junior GroupLeader" fund
Supervision by university-external experts or academic university staff holding a doctoral degree/PhD may be granted in special cases.
A complete announcement of the topic and supervision includes:
- The signed form "Announcement of the topic of the Master's thesis" (signatures of the supervisor and the student).
- An exposé of 2-4 pages. The exposé must include: An abstract of the thesis, a table of contents and a list of the literature used.
- The completed form "Rules of good scientific practice".
All documents can be submitted to the SSC via the Servicedesk.
