Supervision of Academic Work

Supervision of Bachelor’s Theses

Each seminar (SE) or course (KU) in the Bachelor's program Philosophy in the modules M7 -M15 and in seminars (SE) or courses (KU) in the Bachelor's program UF PP in the modulepoints 08.2 and 09.2 is associated with the willingness to supervise Bachelor's theses.

BA theses can only be written in seminars (SE) and courses (KU) that are also coded for one of our BA curricula. BA theses cannot be written in reading proseminars (LPS), excercises (UE)and proseminars (PS), nor in courses which have only been coded for a MA curriculum. Please make students explicitly aware at the beginning of the semester that a BA thesis can bewritten in your course / seminar, that if they want to write a BA thesis they should contact youon time and consult you in advance regarding the thesis.Students should let you know at the beginning, and in any case during the semester, if they planto write a BA thesis in your course/seminar. The planned paper should be discussed with thecourse instructor in advance based on the submission of a brief exposé.

Information on the content and formal requirements of a BA thesis can be found here.

If a BA thesis is written, it may substitute any seminar or final term paper. Please communicate to students how writing a BA thesis changes the modalities of the course.

  • General Process: Students should contact you at the beginning, and in any case during the course of the semester, if they plan to write a BA thesis in your course/seminar. The planned work should be discussed with the course lecturer in advance based on the submission of a short exposé. Please make students explicitly aware at the beginning of the semester that a BA thesis can be written in your course/seminar. Please also point out that if students want to write a BA thesis, they should contact you in a timely manner and discuss the work with you in advance. You can find information about the content and formal requirements of a BA thesis here.

  • Deadlines: The submission deadline for BA theses is the same as for all other assignments fora course or seminar. The submission deadline for the Winter Semester is 30.04. For the SummerSemester, it is 30.09. If students are to be given the opportunity to revise the work again afterreceiving feedback from the course instructor, the course instructor must set an earlier deadlinefor submission. The final submission after the revision in this case is the same: 30.04. for theWinter Semester and 30.09. for the Summer Semester.
  • Grading Requirements: Please note that the BA thesis grade and the grade for the seminar/course must be identical. Thus, the performance in the seminar/course during thesemester should be included in the overall grade in the same way as the BA thesis. We recommend that you ask students to submit their Bachelor's theses via the Moodle e-learning platform in the same way as all other written assignments, and that you check the submission with Turnitin.

  • Entering the Grades: As a teacher, you can enter the grade for the seminar/courseindependently in u:space. However, you cannot enter the BA thesis grade independently. Therefore, in order for students to also have the assessment for the BA thesis enteredadditionally, please send an email to bachelor.philosophie@univie.ac.at.

  • The email to bachelor.philosophie@univie.ac.at should contain the following:
    • LV number, LV title and semester of your course,
    • name and matriculation number of the student,
    • the performance evaluation in number and in words, e.g. "Grade: 1 (Very Good)".

Supervision of Master's Theses

We are pleased to be able to provide you with the “Supervising Master’s thesis” manual. This handbook is aimed at both experienced supervisors who are interested in the practice of their colleagues and want to reflect on their own, as well as beginners who are just developing their approach to supervision. It offers an insight into the practices of the institute in combination with recommendations for your own practice in supervision.
