Doctoral Programme: Philosophy

The aim of the doctoral programme in Philosophy is to support early-career researchers and to provide students with the skills required for independent academic work in the field of philosophy. The programme includes independent research in the chosen dissertation area that meets international academic standards, as well as participation in courses and, where applicable, additional academic activities related to the dissertation project.

General information about doctoral studies is available on the website of the University of Vienna's Center for Doctoral Studies.

For doctoral students in Philosophy within the Humanities and Cultural Studies, the responsible body is Study Programme Directorate 43 (DSPL43).

Doctoral candidates in Philosophy are warmly encouraged to join the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP), which supports exchange and networking throughout the entire doctoral journey. The VDP offers individual guidance, PhD-related workshops and events, and financial support for conferences, events, and research stays abroad.

The doctoral programme is governed by a curriculum that outlines all essential information about its structure and requirements. Students are strongly advised to read the current version of the curriculum carefully and to organise their studies accordingly.
