Admission

Admission to the Master's programme in Philosophy is organised by the Admission Office. The Studies Service Center Philosophy only provides information on the degree programmes and is not responsible for admission. Information on current admission periods and procedures can be found at the University's website for Teaching Affairs and Student Services.

Admission to the Master's programme in Philosophy requires:

  • A bachelor's degree in an adequate discipline (i.e. philosophy) from an officially recognised Austrian university or university of applied sciences, or a degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree awarded by officially recognised bodies, i.e. officially recognised Austrian or foreign institutions of post-secondary education
  • In principle, students who wish to request admission to this programme have to provide proof of sufficient German language proficiency (level C1)
  • Prospective international/English-speaking students (with no or limited German language proficiency, i.e. not at language level C1) who intend to study this programme (entirely) in English can duly request admission to the programme via the admission office. Specifics regarding admission criteria and requirements are determined individually, i.e. on a case-by-case basis during the admission process

Successful completion of the Bachelor's programme in Philosophy at the University of Vienna qualifies students for the Master's programme in Philosophy. This degree programme also serves as a standard of comparison for assessing whether or not a different degree programme can be recognised as equivalent in qualifying students for the Master’s programme in Philosophy. In case a degree programme is considered to be not fully, though sufficiently equivalent during admission, additional ECTS may be prescribed to be recognised as fully equal. Up to 30 additional ECTS credits may be prescribed to be acquired during the course of the master’s programme.

Important information regarding admission

  • Admission to degree programmes and specifics regarding admission criteria and requirements of prospective English-speaking/international students (with no or limited German language proficiency, i.e. not at language level C1) are to be determined individually, i.e. on a case-by-case basis during the admission procedure
  • Please note that some documents required for admission may need to be legalised or translated to German prior to admission. Information regarding legalisation and translations can be found at the Admission Office website
